Straight from Durham, North Carolina, Young Swift is on the move making his name in the game. Young Swift doesn't use profanity, yet and still he makes music that everyone can identify with.
Young Swift has opened up for artists such as Ne-Yo, Lloyd, Monica, DJ Unk and Ludacris. He has performed at some of the hottest clubs on the East coast and even performed at T.I's Club Crucial in Atlanta.
Young Swift has worked with many big names throughout his budding career. One of the most influential, thus far being renowned producer 9th Wonder, formally of the group Little Brother.
Profit: What was your motivation to get into the rap game?
Young Swift:About 4 years ago, I was in a group, originally I was doin beats, you know just doing the music behind it. At that time, they were doing a whole lot of songs and what not, I kinda grew a love for it and I said “Lemme go ahead and try it [rapping] out for a lil bit.” I actually got a little good at it. The two guys that were actually in the group with me were like my inspiration.
You never wanted to go back on the production side of things?
Yeah, I still do that some of the songs I do are actually some of my beats. Well, at least part of them are.
Who were and still are some of the artists that you look up to?
There’s quite a few. A big influence to me would be Jay-Z, Nas, those are the cats that I like and have influenced me a lot. But I also like Kanye, Cassidy, Ludacris, I like those guys too.
I heard you worked with 9th Wonder a little bit for his upcoming album. What was that experience like for you?
That was a great experience, especially with all the work that 9th Wonder has done with people in the industry, like Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, and Jay-Z. We actually went into one of the biggest studios in North Carolina, actually I think it might be the biggest studio, Osceola Studios. It was great recording with those guys because everything was extra big and expensive. It was just a great experience altogether.
Being from North Carolina, have you tried to do some work with Little
Brother?
Actually, I never cam across them yet. It would be great to do something with them. Their music is hot and I listen to them dudes. Their music is influential to our whole state. So I mean, that would be great to do something with them, I just haven’t had the chance to bump into them yet.
What artists would you like to work with in the future?
I’m willing to pull a Lil Wayne move, I’ll work with anybody. Anybody that’s sincere about where they’re going and what they’re doing. I’ll work with them.
Were you a little star struck when you were in the studio with 9th Wonder? Knowing all the artists he’s worked with and the caliber of the artists that he’s worked with?
The deal with 9th Wonder is, he’s very humble. He’s like a cat that you can just kick it with. I really wasn’t star struck with 9th Wonder, he’s just a cool down to earth dude.
Do you feel that MySpace has helped you reach a larger audience,
rather than just being known locally?
Definitely, MySpace has helped with everything. It broadens everything. It helped me reach out to other states like Nebraska, Ohio, and people I normally wouldn’t have access to.
How big was it for you to perform at T.I.'s club, Club Crucial?
That was a great experience. That was the first time we had the chance to go down to Atlanta. It was real nice down there. I got the chance to meet some celebrities. The vibe was real nice down there. The club is actually real nice and had a good feeling to it. The people down there showed a lot of love.
I also saw the videos of some of your performances, what do you like
best about performing?
Seeing people’s reaction to the music, seeing the people get hype to your music. It’s also a ground to see what works and what doesn’t. It helps you improve your music.
Do you feel that performances, and the crowds reaction helps you decide what material to put out next?
That definitely has an impact on it.
Do you feel that you have an advantage at being successful in the rap
game because of your age?
I would say, if I have an advantage it’s because it’s not a lot of it [younger artists]. I would have a longer career. Longevity is important in anything, especially music, being able to stay relevant over time. If I was to come in at 30, I really am not going to be marketable to those younger than me. You know what I’m saying? So in that case I guess I got an advantage.
What producers are you looking forward to working with?
Currently I am working with BQ Music, I would like to do more work with 9th Wonder, Scott Storch, Kanye West, Just Blaze, Dr. Dre, Cool & Dre, Pharrell, and a few others.
What's the next move for Young Swift?
Trying to secure a record deal. That’s really the next thing for me. I’ve been doing this thing for a while now and everything is starting to really come together. I’m working with a lot of different people. I’m just going to continue making music and hopefully secure a record deal.
