I recently had a chance to sit down and chat with Disturbing Tha Peace DJ, DJ Impact. You can catch him doin his thing on Hot Jamz Channel 50 on Sirius Radio, Saturday's @ Midnight. You can also check him out at his website. DJ Impact talks about how he got his start, what artists he has worked with, and even drops a little advice for all you aspiring DJ's out there.
Profit: Impact, tell me about yourself, how did you get started?
Impact: As far as DJ'ing, I actually started DJ’ing at a young age back in high school. I grew up in Berlin [Germany] and had the opportunity to start doing clubs at a young age because of the drinking age, I was able to go to clubs over there at like 16 & 17. I had taken a break from DJ’ing for a little while because I was doing some things, like management. I really got back into DJ’ing a few days after Jam Master Jay was killed. He was one of the first people to really inspire me. I decided to do it as a tribute, you know, get back on the turntables and start doing my thing again.
What was the biggest break for you in your career?
Biggest break…It’s just so many opportunities, I can’t even think…
Is there one that sticks out more than the rest?
Man…all of them got me to where I am today. I think one of the biggest was when I got to open up for RUN-DMC back in 1990-91.
I know you mentioned JMJ as one of your influences. Is there anyone else that was a big influence to you?
Definitely JMJ. Another person I would note is, Kid Capri, as far as clubs and mixtapes are concerned.
What are some artists that you have already worked with?
Man, I could give you a list. As far as doing shows and things, I’ve worked with G-Unit’s Young Buck, of course my DTP family. I’ve opened up and hosted shows for RUN DMC, The Roots, Eminem, Queen Latifah and Outkast. The list goes on and on, I’ve been doin this for a minute!
What artists are you looking to work for or work with in the near future?
On the mixtape tip, it’s a lot. Man I am down for working with pretty much anybody. Man it’s so many I can’t even call it. Anybody that’s doin their thing, knows what they are doing, and are about a positive movement [I’m willing to work with them].
What tools –equipment- do you use when DJ’ing, do you have some favorites that you like to work with?
In so far as equipment, I use the Technics 1200, Rain Mixer, I recently just pushed over to using Serrato with the laptop.
I know Serrato is becoming pretty common. I have had a little hands on experience with that program myself.
Man, it makes everything easier when travelling. Taking them records through the airport was getting a little expensive.
Do you have any advice for aspiring DJ’s out there that’s trying to make it big?
The main thing right now is making sure you keep learning the craft. Understand that everything is about the music first. As far as mixtapes, stop doing Lil’ Wayne mix tapes and putting Lil’ Wayne on the cover. That’s not anything against Lil’ Wayne though. Do something original.
Do you have any mixtapes about to drop soon?
As far as mixtapes, I’ve kind of slacked off a little bit. I’ve been more focused on doing mixshows, the radio show, Hot Jamz Channel 50 on Sirius Radio. I got the Main Event series but, like I said I’ve been layin off that a little bit.
What other radio stations are you on right now?
Sirius, Hot Jamz Channel 50, is the main one right now. With my schedule right now, it gets a little hectic trying to do a bunch of mix shows. With Sirius they give me more freedom to do mix shows at my leisure instead of being at the station. Even with them being pre-recorded, you still get out the sound of what’s going on right now [in hip-hop].
Lastly, any words for the readers…anything in particular that DJ Impact wants to say?
Like I said before, be about the music first and everything else will follow. I just want to thank everybody for their continued support and all that.
